Hunting Weimaraner Alliance - Who We Are:

We are a group of hunters, first and foremost, who wish to see the weimaraner return to its roots as a versatile hunting dog in North America. While exceptional specimens of the breed do exist, it has become difficult to find them and the majority of hunters do not know where to look.

The Hunting Weimaraner Alliance hopes to make this information available to the public, and also guide the breeding practices of weimaraner fanciers. Using stringent breeding guidelines, we hope to see the breed become consistently better in the near future.

Specifically we are a group of breeders spread across North America who choose weimaraners as our hunting companions for their versatility in the field, skill as workers after the shot, and one-of-a-kind temperament in our homes.

Most of us have a few good dogs with which we regularly hunt many types of game: spring goose and dove, early fall woodcock and grouse, quail and pheasant and waterfowl. In the fall many of us call upon our dogs to find wounded deer, and are delighted with their natural tracking ability.

Spring brings more waterfowl but many of us put on our training hats and take to the “events” of AKC hunt tests, WCA ratings, and field trials. We test our puppies in NAVHDA Natural Ability and look to a new generation of hunting partner.

We breed infrequently and look to a small network of like-minded hunters, meticulously searching for just the right match that will hopefully line up the perfect constellation of traits in our hunting weimaraners. Each of us looks for slightly different traits in our breedings, but we all aim for certain common attributes.

We want a dog who loves birds and loves to hunt with us. We strive for dogs who are “naturals” in the field and who are staunch on point from their very first season. Our ideal dogs are great retrievers, with soft mouths and are willing to please.

Our dogs must enjoy swimming, as this is part of the job of a versatile dog. Natural tracking ability rounds out the “must have” list of the versatile weimaraner. Talk to us and you will see that this is just a basic list of traits, but essential to us as hunters.
